Rubber Material Properties and Applications

Natural Rubber (Pure Gum)

Durometer Range: 30 to 90

Temperature Range: -65°F to +160°F

Applications: Any situation where non- marking is desired, wipers, squeegee, certain medical

Not Recommended For

  • High temperatures
  • Poor resistance to ozone, sunlight and flame
  • Poor resistance to oils, gasoline, hydrocarbon solvents (degreasers), aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons and chlorinated solvents

Typical Properties

  • Excellent mechanical properties
  • Excellent resilience and compression set
  • Excellent electrical resistivity
  • Excellent adhesion to fabric and metals
  • Excellent resistance to water and dilute acids and alkalis
  • Good flexibility at low temperatures
  • Good resistance to abrasion
  • Good resistance to oxidation, steam, ketones and oxygenated solvents, alcohols and ammonia
  • OK in concentrated alkali and acid

Neoprene

Durometer Range: 20, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80

Temperature Range: -30°F to +212°F

Applications: V-belts, impellers, underground cables, hose, many different applications for seals. Gaskets, washers

Not Recommended For

  • Chlorinated solvents, degreasers, diester synthetic lubricants
  • Limited flexibility at low temperatures

Typical Properties

  • Excellent ozone, weather and natural aging resistance
  • Excellent abrasion resistance
  • Excellent resistance to alcohols, ammonia, dilute and concentrated acids and alkalis
  • Good heat resistance
  • Good mechanical properties
  • Good compression set
  • Good flame resistance
  • Good resistance to water, steam, most oils and petroleum products
  • OK in kerosene, ketones and oxygenated solvents

Nitrile (Buna-N)

Durometer Range: 30A to 70D

Temperature Range: -60°F to +300°F

Applications: Gasoline hose, hydraulic parts, oil contact, linings, gaskets, washers, seals

Not Recommended For

  • Low resistance to ozone and sunlight
  • Poor in ketones and oxygenated solvents
  • Not recommended in methyl chloride
  • Poor flame resistance
  • Poor electrical resistivity

Typical Properties

  • Excellent oil, gasoline and aliphatic hydrocarbons (such as kerosene) resistance
  • Good heat resistance
  • Good mechanical properties
  • Good compression set
  • Good resistance to water, ammonia, concentrated acids, alkalis and aromatic hydrocarbons
  • Good resistance to oxidation
  • OK in steam, alcohols and chlorinated solvents

Silicone

Durometer Range: (Shore A) 10 to 85

Temperature Range: -100°F to +400°F

Applications: Aviation, aerospace, electronics, healthcare, medical, food processing

Not Recommended For

  • Poor mechanical properties
  • Low tensile strength
  • Poor resistance to aliphatic hydrocarbons
  • Poor resistance to oil and gasoline
  • Not recommended for degreasers and solvents, especially chlorinated solvents like methyl chloride

Typical Properties

  • Excellent heat resistance
  • Excellent resistance to ozone, sunlight and oxidation
  • Excellent electrical resistivity
  • Excellent flame resistance
  • Excellent resistance to water, ammonia and alkalis (dilute and concentrated)
  • Retains excellent flexibility at low temperature
  • Good compression set resistance
  • Good resistance to dilute acids
  • OK in steam, alcohol, concentrated acid, ketones and oxygenated solvents

Fluroelastomer / Flurocarbon (Viton ®)

Durometer Range: (Shore A) 55 to 90

Temperature Range: 10°F to +400°F

Applications: Automotive seals, engine grommets, low outgassing computer seals

Not Recommended For

  • Poor low temperature flexibility except for highly specialized grades
  • Is attacked by alcohols, strong alkalis and amines
  • Inferior friction and tack characteristics

Typical Properties

  • Excellent resistance to heat, oxidation, ozone, hydrocarbons, and many other chemicals
  • Excellent vibration dampening characteristics
  • Can be formulated for excellent compression set resistance
  • Good abrasion resistance at ambient and elevated temperatures
  • Good flame resistance

Hypalon ®

Durometer Range: (Shore A) 40 to 90

Temperature Range: -30°F to +260°F

Applications: Wire and cable, roll covers, hose, roofing membranes, water reservoir liners

Not Recommended For

  • Inferior friction and tack
  • Poor compression set at elevated temperatures
  • Attacked by chlorinated and aromatic hydrocarbons

  • Resists wide pH variations of chemicals
  • Good high temperature resistance
  • Good ozone and weathering resistance
  • Fair to good hydrocarbon resistance
  • Good dielectric properties
  • Good flame resistance

Butyl

Durometer Range: (Shore A) 30 to 80

Temperature Range: 50°F to +212°F

Applications: Shock mounts, bladders, membranes, inner tubes, bumpers, caulking, pharmaceuticals

Not Recommended For

  • Relatively poor abrasion resistance
  • Poor resistance to hydrocarbons
  • Not inherently flame resistant
  • Prone to stress relaxation and creep with time

Typical Properties

  • Unsurpassed for vibration dampening and control
  • Unsurpassed for gas permeation resistance
  • Good water, acid and base resistance
  • Good oxidation and ozone resistanc
  • Good electricals; can be made either insulative or conductive

EPDM

Durometer Range: (Shore A) 40 to 90

Temperature Range: -40°F to +270°F

Applications: “Wet” rollers, roofing membranes, windshield wiper blades, wire, cable and bladders

Not Recommended For

  • Poor abrasion resistance
  • Poor hydrocarbon resistance
  • Poor flame resistance

Typical Properties

  • Excellent weathering resistance
  • Excellent resistance to oxidation, heat and ozone
  • Excellent acid, base and water resistance
  • Good dielectrics

Flurosilicone

Durometer Range: (Shore A) 40 to 60

Temperature Range: -100°F to +450°F

Applications: Aeronautical seals, highly specialized and extreme low temperature seals

Not Recommended For

  • Poor mechanical properties rating
  • Low tensile strength
  • Fair compression set resistance
  • Poor resistance to ketones and oxygenated solvents

Typical Properties

  • Excellent heat resistance
  • Excellent resistance to ozone, sunlight and oxidation
  • Excellent electrical resistivity
  • Excellent flame resistance
  • Excellent resistance to water, ammonia, dilute acids and alkalis
  • Retains excellent flexibility at low temperature
  • Excellent resistance to lubricating oils, fuel oils and hydrocarbons such as kerosene
  • Good resistance to concentrated acids and alkalis
  • OK in steam and alcohols

Polyurethane

Durometer Range: (Shore A) 50 to 90

Temperature Range: -30°F to +160°F

Applications: Friction drive rolls, abrasion resistant wheels

Not Recommended For

  • Physical properties deteriorate rapidly when temperatures approach 160°F
  • Certain formulations are sensitive to moisture
  • Poor dielectric strength
  • Poor flame resistance
  • Attacked by concentrated acids, ketones, chlorinated hydrocarbons

Typical Properties

  • Unsurpassed abrasion resistance
  • Excellent friction material for rolls or drive mechanism
  • Resistance to many hydrocarbons
  • Resists ozone attack
